Fun helps school, family

Covenant Community School is hosting a raffle at its carnival Saturday to raise money for a vivacious young girl who is awaiting a heart transplant.
Everyone is invited to attend the carnival, which features games, obstacle courses, face painting, giant inflatables and more.
The school is raffling off prizes to benefit Hope Williams, who was born with complex congenital heart disease.
Williams underwent three heart surgeries in six years, the first of which was when she was just 7 months old. Her mom, Jennifer, hoped the third surgery in September would last into her daughter’s teen years. However, just before Thanksgiving, Williams had some complications. The oxygen level in her blood was low. She was transported to a number of medical facilities before doctors told her parents she needed to go on the heart transplant list.
Hope was taken to St. Louis the day before Thanksgiving. Her parents left their jobs in Stillwater, and they have been living in St. Louis while they wait for a heart.
Holly Houseworth, a Spanish and theater teacher at Covenant Community, said the school just wants to help the family. She and many students had close interactions with Williams, who had attended the day care connected to the school since she was 14 months old.Houseworth described Hope as a fun-loving, caring girl.“She knows that she’s sick, but she’s still trying to live a normal life,” she said. “She wanted to go swimming; she wanted to go on all the field trips. She didn’t let anything hold her back.” Houseworth encouraged people to attend the carnival, which she said features fun for kids of all ages.“I think it will be fun,” she said. “Something different to do during the weekend.”•
